SH-53: Hauser Lake Road to North Bruss Road
Additional turn lanes and a reconstructed roadway base will improve safety and mobility.
Additional turn lanes and a reconstructed roadway base will improve safety and mobility.
Two lanes will remain open during construction, but speed limits will be reduced and the lanes will be very narrow.
Drivers should be familiar with this work zone, as widening first began in 2022 to add a center turn lane on the two-mile stretch starting near McGuire Road and continuing through Bruss Road. Last year crews added temporary pavement to the south side of the highway to keep two lanes open during construction this year while they build the base of the new lane to the north. Crews will also reconstruct the existing two lanes of SH-53.
By the time construction ends in September, drivers can expect new right turn lanes and lighting at the intersections of McGuire Road, North Church Road, Bruss Road and Hauser Lake Road. An acceleration lane at Cloverleaf Road will help drivers get up to speed and merge with eastbound traffic.
More on constructionA continuous center turn lane will allow drivers to safely turn off the highway without impeding thru traffic.
Right turn lanes and lighting on SH-53 at busier intersections like North Church Road and North Bruss Road will also improve safety. The existing turn lanes and lighting at McGuire Road will be improved, and the section will receive wider shoulders.
The section of SH-53 near the future site of the Pleasant View interchange will not receive improvements with this project; however, a left turn and a right turn lane from SH-53 onto Hauser Lake Road, as well as lighting, is planned.
Pleasant View interchangeA series of projects in 2022-2024 and 2027 will widen and reconstruct SH-53 between the state line and Rathdrum. The interchange at Pleasant View was planned to start construction in 2028 but with the awarding of a new grant is expected to start sooner. No project is currently funded to modify four miles between Bruss Road and Latah Street.
Widening the highway will improve safety for turning drivers. Corridor improvements total more than $40 million.
Corridor fact sheetWork will start again Monday, April 10, to finish widening SH-53 in this area. Lanes will be open but narrow. Construction will wrap up in the fall. Read more.
