Construction Update

Construction

ITD closed the Middleton Overpass in August 2020. Motorists will be detoured for nine months. Click here to see the detour map.

What to expect during construction:

Improvements

In addition to making room for additional lanes on I-84, the new Middleton Road Overpass will have new improvements.

This includes:

Cherry Lane and Middleton Road intersection short term detour

ITD needs to raise the height of the Cherry Lane/Middleton Road
intersection to match the new Middleton Road Overpass on I-84.
When the new overpass opens this spring, it will have more clearance
for trucks on I-84.

To keep the expansion of I-84 between Nampa and Caldwell on schedule, work at the intersection must be completed while the weather is good.

Why is ITD replacing the Middleton Road Overpass?
Why is ITD replacing the Middleton Road Overpass?

The overpass must be replaced to allow for future widening on I-84 between Franklin Road Interchange in Caldwell and Karcher Interchange in Nampa. As part of the project, the Middleton and Cherry Lane intersection must be reconstructed.

General
What improvements are planned for Middleton Road Overpass?
What improvements are planned for Middleton Road Overpass?

  • One lane in each direction on the overpass.
  • Wider shoulders on both sides to accommodate bicycles.
  • Sidewalk on the east side of the bridge.
  • 17’ vertical clearance on I-84.
  • A traffic signal at the intersection of Cherry Lane and Middleton Road.
Closures
How long will the overpass be closed?
How long will the overpass be closed?

The Middleton Road Overpass will be closed for approximately nine months. It is expected to re-open in May 2021.

Detours
What is the detour route for the Middleton detour?

Why is the Idaho Transportation Department closing the Middleton Road and Cherry Lane intersection?
Why is the Idaho Transportation Department closing the Middleton Road and Cherry Lane intersection?

ITD is closing the intersection of Middleton Road and Cherry Lane to raise the elevation of the intersection to match the height of the new Middleton Overpass. The Middleton Overpass will be higher to increase the vertical clearance on I-84.

Closures
How long will Cherry Lane be closed?
How long will Cherry Lane be closed?

The closure will last approximately two months.

General
Why can’t ITD wait until the Ustick/Midland roundabout is completed before they start work?
Why can’t ITD wait until the Ustick/Midland roundabout is completed before they start work?

If the grade of Cherry Lane is not raised, the overpass will be unable to connect to Middleton Road. It is time sensitive because new asphalt pavement is being placed at the intersection. Asphalt must be placed during warmer temperatures. If work on the intersection is delayed, it will delay other parts of the project later on, and would likely delay future projects to improve I-84. The I-84 improvements have been planned sequentially and it is important to complete all projects on time.

General
Why is a full closure necessary at the Cherry Lane/Middleton Road intersection? Can’t ITD keep one lane open?
Why is a full closure necessary at the Cherry Lane/Middleton Road intersection? Can’t ITD keep one lane open?

The intersection will be raised by five feet. Raising an intersection requires working on the whole intersection at one time. There is no way to keep one lane open.

Detours
What is the detour route for Cherry Lane?
What is the detour route for Cherry Lane?

The detour will be in place from Middleton Road to Linden Road and Northside Northside Boulevard to Cherry Lane until the Midland/Ustick roundabout is finished in late September. Once finished, the detour route will be in place from Middleton Road to Ustick Road to Midland Boulevard.

How will emergency responders access neighborhoods in the area with so many intersections closed?
How will emergency responders access neighborhoods in the area with so many intersections closed?

ITD has worked closely with emergency responders in the area to ensure they have adequate access routes in the event emergency services are needed.

General
Why is ITD closing the Middleton and Cherry intersection when the Midland/Ustick Roundabout construction is taking place at the same time? Did ITD and Nampa Highway not coordinate?
Why is ITD closing the Middleton and Cherry intersection when the Midland/Ustick Roundabout construction is taking place at the same time? Did ITD and Nampa Highway not coordinate?

ITD and the Nampa Highway District have been coordinating for a couple of years during the design of the Middleton Road Overpass. The Midland/Ustick roundabout project was supposed to be complete in July 2020. Unfortunately, the public utilities were not relocated in time and it delayed the project by two months. ITD and Nampa Highway District are continuing to coordinate.
