Additional turn lanes and a reconstructed roadway base will improve safety and mobility.
Read MoreCommunity input is important to the success of the project. An online meeting between May 19 and June 8 (2020) presented proposed improvements and gathered feedback that will help the design team. Meeting materials are still available for review by visiting the downloads section.
A continuous center turn lane will allow drivers to safely turn off the highway without impeding thru traffic.
Right turn lanes and lighting on ID-53 at busier intersections like North Church Road and North Bruss Road will also improve safety. The existing turn lanes and lighting at McGuire Road will be improved, and the section will receive wider shoulders.
The section of ID-53 near the future site of the Pleasant View interchange will not receive improvements with this project; however, a left turn lane from ID-53 onto Hauser Lake Road is planned, and ITD is reviewing the need for a right turn lane and lighting at this intersection as well.
Pleasant View interchangeA series of projects in 2022 and 2024 will widen and reconstruct ID-53 between the state line and Rathdrum, with a new interchange at Pleasant View Road planned in 2026. There are no plans to modify four miles between Bruss Road and Latah Street as they do not experience as many crashes at intersections.
Widening the highway will improve safety for turning drivers. Corridor improvements total more than $40 million.
