ID-41: Mullan to Prairie

An expanded highway will help meet the growing traffic demands on this highly-used corridor between Rathdrum and Post Falls.

The highway will be expanded to four lanes divided by a 50-foot median where possible. Depending on the location, intersection improvements will add capacity, provide signalization or limit certain movements to facilitate mobility through the whole corridor. A path will be constructed to the east of the highway.

Intersection changes

Two new signals at 16th and Hope avenues will be installed, with necessary right and left turn lanes added to their current configurations.

Both Poleline and Prairie avenues will feature dual left turn lanes onto the highway. A right turn lane will be added at Poleline Avenue to head south on the highway, and Prairie Avenue will feature a right turn lane for both directions on ID-41. There will also be two dedicated through lanes at the intersection for traffic on Prairie Avenue.



Non-signalized intersections

After construction, movements at non-signalized intersections will be guided by small, curbed medians. Drivers on the highway will be able to turn right or left across traffic, but drivers on the side street will only be able to turn right onto the highway. Drivers on side streets will be able to make U-turns at the nearest signal to change directions or to access businesses on the other side of the highway.

Although drivers will be able to use new left turn lanes on the highway to access 12th Avenue,  a curbed median will only allow right turns onto the highway after construction.

Corridor construction

This section of ID-41 expansion is now scheduled to be constructed in 2021 and 2022 due to prolonged right of way negotiations, though other sections will continue as planned. Utility relocations for this section may be scheduled for 2020. All work to expand ID-41 is planned for completion in 2022.

The existing highway will essentially become the southbound lanes of the new highway, allowing much of the work to be constructed with minimal impact.

Once work starts, traffic will continue to run on the current lanes while two new lanes and the railroad overpass are built to the east. Once those lanes are finished, traffic will be moved onto that section while the old section is reconstructed.

More details will become available before construction once projects are bid.
