An expanded highway will help meet the growing traffic demands on this highly-used corridor between Rathdrum and Post Falls.
One mile of two-lane highway will be expanded to four lanes. It will be divided by either a 50-foot median or a small curb. A path will be constructed to the east of the highway, with a possible underground connection to existing paths at Nagel Lane.Read More
The path will be narrowed from 12 feet to 10 feet north of Nagel Lane, and a parallel path to the west of the highway will be reestablished in this section.
A pedestrian underpass is being considered by ITD and the city of Rathdrum. If constructed, pedestrians would not have to wait to cross the highway, and they would be able to head east or west on the existing path along Nagel Lane.
ITD typically constructs paths if a local jurisdiction is willing to maintain them.
The path will be illuminated at key locations and intersections.
Improvements from Mullan Avenue in Post Falls to Boekel Avenue in Rathdrum are scheduled to be constructed in 2020 and 2021. The existing highway will essentially become the southbound lanes of the new highway, allowing much of the work to be constructed with minimal impact.
Once work starts, traffic will continue to run on the current lanes while two new lanes and the railroad overpass are built to the east. Once those lanes are finished, traffic will be moved onto that section while the old section is reconstructed.
More details will become available before construction.
