This study will look at improving parking at a popular beach along ID-55
The Federal Highway Administration, Western Federal Lands Highway Division (FHWA-WFLHD), in cooperation with Boise National Forest and the Idaho Transportation Department, proposes to improve safety and operations at the Banks Beach picnic area, located at milepost 77.9 on the west side of Idaho Highway 55.
Read MoreThe picnic area, located approximately 1 mile south of the intersection of ID-55 and Banks-Lowman Road, is a popular day-use area for recreating beside the Payette River. Currently, users parallel park next to the highway. Heavy traffic in the area is exacerbated by this recreational use, and multiple accidents have occurred near the site.
Parking demand exceeds capacity in peak summer months, when visitors park at other pullouts to the north and south or at unestablished parking locations nearby. Preliminary alternatives being considered to address safety and operational concerns at the site include:
• Separated parking area on the west side of ID-55
• Separated parking area on the east side of ID-55 (with pedestrian underpass)
• Separated parking areas on both sides of ID-55 (with pedestrian underpass)
