Summer 2023 Highway Repaving

The Idaho Transportation Department will repave several miles of highways in Boise during the summer of 2023.

Work includes portions of Broadway Avenue, Chinden Boulevard, Glenwood Street and the I-184 River Street exit.

Project overview

ITD is replacing deteriorated pavement on several highways in Boise:

  • Broadway Avenue (US-20) between I-84 and Front Street
  • The River Street exit from the I-184 Connector
  • Glenwood Street (SH-44) between Chinden Boulevard and Strawberry Glenn Road (south of State Street)
  • Chinden Boulevard (SH-44) between Explorer Drive and Joplin Road

Chinden Boulevard

Work on Chinden Boulevard will be underway until September. Crews are working between Explorer Drive and Joplin Road. This section of pavement has deteriorated and is due for replacement.

  • Work on Chinden will begin at 8 p.m. during the week and at 7 p.m. on Sundays.
  • All lanes will re-open by 5 a.m. on week days and at 8 a.m. on Saturdays and Sundays.
  • Lanes and speed limits will be reduced. Flaggers will direct traffic at intersections.
  • Nighttime noise will increase where crew are working.
  • Access to businesses will be open.
  • Crews will remove (“mill”) the top layer of pavement before repaving. Please drive or cycle carefully on the milled surface.

Work on Glenwood Street will resume Friday, Sept. 8 after a pause for the Western Idaho Fair.

  • Crews will work from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. on weeknights. Work will end at 7 a.m. on Saturdays and 8 a.m. on Sundays.
  • Lanes and speed limits will be reduced on Glenwood Street.
  • Flaggers will direct traffic at intersections.
  • Some work will be noisy.
  • Crews will remove (“mill”) the top layer of pavement before repaving. Please drive or cycle carefully on the milled surface.
  • Access to businesses will be open.

Broadway Avenue

ITD has repaved Broadway Avenue between the Federal Way ramps and Front Street. Crews are completing final clean-up activities, raising manholes to match the new pavement, and striping the road.

  • Work hours on Broadway are from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. On Sundays, work will begin at 7 p.m.
  • Flaggers may direct traffic and pedestrians around the areas where crews are working
  • This project included substantial repairs at the intersection of Broadway Avenue and Boise Avenue. This area was damaged by a water main failure in December.
  • A concrete “bulb-out” has been added at Rossi Street to keep through traffic in the correct lane.
  • To reduce the risk of future pavement damage from watering, the City of Boise and ITD have decided to replace grassy areas in the median with rock. Existing trees will remain.
